After significant discussion with the members of the Project Graduation executive committee, including committee heads, we have decided to cancel Project Graduation this year.
We believe that it is important for us to be clear about the reasons for this decision, since some states are loosening stay-at-home restrictions and since we recognize the emotional importance of this 30-year tradition,. There is significant evidence which indicates that any loosening of “stay in place” restrictions should be reserved for the physical and economic health and well-being of communities. Economic factors might necessitate the soft re-opening of society, but we must recognize the potential health risk for our most vulnerable. Therefore, any decision about mass-gatherings must take into consideration the risk/benefit for the entirety of our community. Unfortunately, we believe that PG2020 does not fall into the category of necessary for the health and well-being of our community, especially since our main goal of Project Graduation is to provide a safe and fun environment for our students.
Project Graduation has a specific mandate to provide a safe & fun environment for the seniors after graduation. The prizes were always something that our local group decided to provide each year, based on donations and ticket sales. Given the economic hardship that some of our donors or their employees might be experiencing, we have decided to return donations and leave the bank account with the baseline amount of funds for the Class of 2021.
We do want to thank our donors for their support this year. We look forward to seeing the creative ways in which our Auburn High family will find safe ways to celebrate our seniors’ achievements.
